Daniel 10
The Importance of Concern
Have you ever seen a grown man cry? This chapter tells us that Daniel did. He was very unhappy. He wanted God to know the deepness of his concern. He really cared about the Jews. Daniel had many things to be thankful for, but seeing his people continue in captivity weighed heavily upon him.
We are to show the joy of the Lord. We are to give thanks for everything (I Thessalonians 5:16-18). But that does not mean that we have to paint plastic smiles on our faces and walk with a spring in our step all the time. There are times it is very appropriate to be sad. In fact it is important that we even mourn at times.
Some Background
Daniel 10:1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.
This event happened in the third year of Cyrus. What makes this so significant is that in the first year of Cyrus, a decree was issued that stated that the Jews were to rebuild Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-2). It is now the third year. Things are not going well for the rebuilding project. In fact, things are falling apart! There was a group of people who hired lobbyists to stop and frustrate the building project (Ezra 4:5).
Concern Lasts
Daniel 10:2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.
