Pulse is anything that grows from the ground. It is not limited to vegetables or beans. It includes fruits, vegetables, grains, berries, herbs, nuts, roots, etc. Daniel thought it would be easier to challenge all meats rather than provide details of proper meats and butchering methods.

Meats also tended to be butchered in honor of some idol before being offered. They were dedicated to idols and eating of these meats indicated that one was a devout follower of that god.

People can get fat just eating plant products. Fat comes from excess calories consumed.

“Worse liking” as found in Daniel 1:10 does not have to do with what we like or dislike. Instead, it has to do with a state of mind and emotion. The concern of the Prince was that Daniel would be presented to the king looking unhappy, frustrated, or sad. By providing royal banquets to these “guests” the king expected to see them happy and excited about life.

The word translated “wine” is nothing more than the Hebrew word that is very generic and refers to any kind of juice. It could be grape, orange, pomegranate, apple, berry, or just about anything. It does not stand for anything alcoholic. The king who wanted these teenagers to be at their utmost mental sharpness would never give them fermented beverages.
