Does, then, Grace Abounding and Grace Reigning mean liberty to continue in sin? Certainly not, the very suggestion is shameful, and shows a want of appreciation of the truth. As Dr. Griffith Thomas puts it: “Continuance in sin is impossible to a justified man, because of his union with Christ in death and life.” So the two great truths hang together. Gratuitous Justification, and Union with Christ.

Let me, first of all, read this great chapter to you, indicating the obvious meaning of it, and showing its divisions.

In the first verse we have the question: “Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?” and in the second verse we have the answer: “God forbid!” The Revised Version renders it: “How shall we who died to sin live any longer therein?”

Three Things to Know

We then have nine verses divided into three divisions, each beginning with the word “Know.” They are therefore the things that we ought to know, they state three great truths of which we should not be ignorant:

Romans 6:3. Know ye not—The meaning of your baptism.

Romans 6:6. Knowing what death with Christ means.
