Reuben Archer Torrey was born on January 28, 1856, in Hoboken, New Jersey. He was married to Clara Smith on October 22, 1879, in Ohio, and had five children (four girls and one boy). In 1878-1905, he pastored several churches, first in Ohio, then Minnesota, and then Chicago, where he became also involved with the Moody Bible Institute. After 1901, he became involved in evangelistic work, touring much of the world as an evangelist. In 1904, while conducting a very successful evangelistic campaign in England, he made his one and only visit to the Keswick Convention. The featured speaker was not able to attend, so he was asked to speak. His four messages brought a living flame to the convention. In 1908, he founded the Montrose Bible Conference in Pennsylvania. In 1912-1914, he was dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA). He wrote over 40 books on practical Christianity and Bible study aids. He died October 26, 1928 in Asheville, North Carolina and is buried in Montrose, Pennsylvania. SourcesPrimary sources unknown. Additions are from: Herbert F. Stevenson.
